The New Yorker on Avatar

The new issue of The New Yorker has a lengthy, interesting piece on director James Cameron and his upcoming SF film Avatar.

I just reading your review of Malzberg's Breakfast in the Ruins when I realised that you must almost certainly be the Alvaro of the Malzberg website from way back. Hello again if that is you. I'm Guy Salvidge and I contributed a few Malzberg reviews back in the day. I had a brief look at your blog and I see you are a writer like myself. Nice to see that you are doing all right for yourself.

Guy, I remember! Yes, same Alvaro :-) Thanks for dropping by and writing a line. I hope you enjoyed the review of Breakfast in the Ruins. I have very vague plans to maybe bring the Malzberg site back -- in revamped form, of course, probably something more approaching a blog template. Your contributions were appreciated. I did take a look at your blog and enjoyed your recent book reviews.

Yep, likewise. Your writing is very dense and scholarly, so I didn't read your review in the detail it deserved, but I did get the idea that you were taking Malzberg to task over a few of his assertions about the state of SF etc. In fact I got onto your blog from thinking about Malzberg again and finding a bunch of Malzberg's newer writings on the Baen website. Take a look if you are interested:

The content is much the same as Engines/Breakfast but I always find Malzberg's nonfiction to be worth reading for the historical perspective he provides.

I have mostly moved on from Malzberg myself though, haven't read his stuff in years now. My current fascination is a US writer by the name of Harry Crews that you may have heard of. His A Feast of Snakes is right up there with the best of Malzberg in the 'apocayptic' stakes.

Thanks for the Malzberg link; I had seen some of those pieces, but not all. Will have to check them out!

I've followed a similar reading "evolution," in the sense that I don't reach Malzberg's fiction very often these days, primarily as he doesn't write much new fiction.

I had not heard of Harry Crews until your mention. Looks interesting. I have added Feast of Snakes to my embarrassingly long wish list of future books to purchase. Thanks for the tip :-)

I myself have been trying to read widely. A lot of short stories, science fiction and otherwise; some literary classics; some non-fiction; a few mysteries. And so on. If you're interested I would be happy to add you to the distribution list for this blog and you'll receive regular updates in your inbox :-)
